AFF Cup: Singapore's Second Keeper Eyes Starting Role
Singapore reserve goalkeeper Hassan Sunny is not giving up yet in his fight for the No. 1 shirt even though he has been on the bench for the last three matches.
Singapore national coach Radojko Avramovic has opted to use the more experienced Lionel Lewis as the last line of defense for the defending champions and it seems unlikely that it will change anytime soon.
In the three Group A matches of the AFF Suzuki Cup in Jakarta, Lionel conceded only one goal – in Singapore's 3-1 demolition of Myanmar last Sunday.
"Thus far, the team have been playing very well in this competition, so I believe that the head coach is comfortable using Lionel between the posts," said Hassan, who plays for Tampines Rovers.
"Lionel and I are good friends off the pitch but we are competing for the right to use the No.1 shirt and it is a healthy competition.
"I believe that my chance will come although at this point in time, I have to be patient."
And Hassan is pragmatic as to why Avramovic preferred to use Lewis as the current No. 1 where he feels that the Home United custodian might be a little more experienced than him.
"Maybe Lewis is more experienced when it comes to the big matches," quipped the 24-year-old.
Lewis, who is two years older, has taken over the mantle left behind by former Singapore custodian Rezal Hassan and has never been challenged – until now.
